My Approach

My graduate study, at Johns Hopkins School of Public Health, was focused on planning and implementing alcohol and drug treatment programs. While in school I worked as a psychiatric counselor in the Johns Hopkins Hospital emergency room, After graduate school I worked in program planning for the State of Illinois and also had a small counseling practice.

Years later, after a hiatus from the work and a deep exporation into the creative impulse, I worked at St. David's Hospital in Austin as the lead counselor in the Women's Health Eating Disorders Treatment Program. In addition I taught Crisis Intervention and Addictions classes to counseling, criminal justice and paramedic students at Austin Community College.

I started a small private practice at The Austin Men's Center, specializing in addictions. Eventually, I took over operation of the Men's Center but also continued with creative work in writing and eventually photography.

My approach is based on working with the psychological and emotional distortions that lock us into negative behaviors and emotional states which rob us of a significant connection to the people, and the world, around us. These negative leanings either come from early life experience or get entrenched in us because of long-term addictive behaviors, or most often, both. By clearing away the emotional and mental damage we're opened to a much more positive, satisfying, connected and creative view of our lives. Simply put, we're happier and we have more choices.

Frequently I work with people who are well established in recovery from process addictions, or drugs and alcohol addictions, and work with those clients to bridge lost parts of their developmental history so we can move into, not just a functional adult life, but a fullfilling one.

I use a number of approaches to working with addictions, and apply what seems most helpful to the individual I am working with.
